Nowadays, as everything is changing very fast, we can never be sure of what will happen to the world in fifteen or fifty years. Although people like to make predictions, the fortunes that are told do not become true very often. For example we can never be sure of what will happen to languages in 50 years or how people are going to learn them.
In 50 years there will probably be fewer languages than currently. As the time goes past, smaller languages fade and there will be nobody to speak them. If there are about 6000 languages spoken in the world today, then in 50 years there might be only 200 languages left. Only the languages that are spoken by many people will survive the globalization. Smaller languages will become rare or even extinct.
Globalization will mix nationalities in the world, so learning languages will be easier. In fifty years there will probably be millions of families where parents are from different nationalities. This means that children will grow up in multicultural environment and speak two or more languages as their mother tongue. Kids will also develop their language skills by watching TV channels and listening to music in foreign language. When children go to school, they will not learn in the way that we are used to. The importance of teachers might be decreased in 50 years. As the technology is developing so fast, there might be online teachers at school. For example English teachers might live in another country and come to see their students once a semester.
As travelling has become cheaper and cheaper, the students will travel all around the world to study foreign languages. There has been an increasing trend of being an exchange student for a year or going on a youth exchange. If the European Union, that has all kind of student exchange programs, continues to host all kind of youth programs, then the students might study abroad a lot in 50 years time.
After graduating from school, people might not study any new languages at all as they already speak so many. But if they still want to learn, then there might be ways that seem impossible for us now. For example, in 50 years the psychologists might have found a way to teach foreign languages through hypnosis. I believe it is possible even nowadays but most of the people are afraid to try it. In the future, people might be more trusting to each other and there can be really good hypnotisers. There can also be a way to learn languages during the sleep. It might be related to hypnosis.
Furthermore, in fifty years people might have discovered also a way to stimulate the brain to study different things. For example, for learning languages, there can be special electrodes that will be put on the head. These electrodes can stimulate certain areas of brain with electric shock and a language can be passed to people’s heads this way. In 50 years this kind of technology can still be very expensive but already in use. It will be useful for preserving smaller languages.
In conclusion I would like to say that nothing in this world is surely predictable. Fifty years is not a very long time for big changes in history and language learning but it can be enough to change the environment surrounding us and technology in a way that we can never be sure of. I can only predict a way of learning languages in fifty years but I can never be certain if any of my predictions will come true. If it could then I am certain that life would be a lot easier for the millions of inhabitants of the Earth.
