Norway, described as a snow-covered country with four different seasons, is, sadly, not the right way to depict the country anymore. Due to the climate-change, we in Norway are first and foremost facing challenges such as rising average temperature, more precipitation and extreme weather. These are the earth-shattering climate changes we deep down saw coming, but never bothered to turn our heads around and change. I can’t help thinking; is it too late for us to make a difference, and bring back the unwavering and stable earth we once knew, or are we doomed to live with our earth standing on its last legs because of our ruthless abuse?
To begin with, the increase of precipitation occurring in my daily life has revealed side-effects that I, as well as others, never bore in mind. A while ago, there was an enormous landslide in one of our municipalities, caused by the increasing precipitation. The landslide swept several houses, including my grandmother’s, down three hundred meters and into the sea. To me, it is both shocking and nerve-racking to experience these solemn consequences of the climate change at close range, and it is impossible not to be disappointed in grown ups and politicians for letting it go so far before taking any action. I have to ask myself; do we really need to feel and look the consequences in the eye before we even consider taking action?
In addition, the rising temperature is showing its presence in my daily life, as to hotter summers and a constantly changing weather. As normal human beings you’re probably thinking that hotter summers must be one of the few affirmative side-effects caused by the global-warming. In view of the fact that we’re practically freezing our buttocks off in Norway, it would be fairly nice with higher temperatures. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s not worth the other consequences due to the climate change.
An additional consequence of the rising temperature affecting my daily life is the melting of glaciers in our country. Glaciers that once stayed firm the whole year are now melting. This doesn’t just affect me and my conscience, but also habitats living in and on the glaciers. I on my part think this is one of the most certain signs of the rising temperature and the climate challenge that lies ahead and distressing my daily life.
Correspondingly, it is extremely important for us to start contributing to a healthier climate for our future. To do so, I think it is of great importance to make other people engaged in and aware of the climate-changes happening around us. Personally, I would inform my family and friends, and try to influence and slightly manipulate them into becoming more aware of our future prospects. With informed and willing people our outlook is brighter as it depends on all of us cooperating.
What is more, I would sort my garbage. Sorting garbage is something many municipalities in Norway have come to love. In my community, we sort our food, plastic, tin, paper and glass, which I believe is a really good contribution to our future. It goes without saying that sorting our garbage makes us more conscious of our increasing and huge consumption.
Likewise, I believe in voting for politicians and parties that focuses on the environment, as well as engaging in organizations that center around the similar issue. Politics is what regulates our country, and as we are living in a democracy, it is the citizens who form the regulations. Consequently, we have the power to affect our country’s interests.
Last but not least, I can contribute by decreasing my consumption when it comes to material benefits as well as electricity. The consumption in a normal, Norwegian household has tripled since 1960, which reveals our massive spending at the cost of our environment. I think by reducing my consumption by buying fewer clothes and using less water as to showering is a good way for me to contribute.
In short; the future is in our hands. We have to take responsibility for our actions, and start cooperating if we don’t want “to rob our children of their future”.
